After Gevrey-Chambertin, Mercurey is the largest red Appellation in Burgundy. Being from the lesser-known Cote Chalonnaise, it is thus also home to some of the greatest value for money wines in this vaunted region of the world, often associated with out-of-reach wine prices rather than value for money. Which makes this Appellation a genuine investment target for those with inside knowledge. The unique and varying but predominantly clay soils that make up the crucible of vineyards surrounding Mercurey, give rise to many types of wines under this one Appellation. The reference Producer Chateau de Chamirey blends 1/3 of its best-located 1er Cru vineyards into its Village Mercurey, precisely to elevate its level of quality consistently way above the norm. At under half the price of an equal-quality Gevrey-Chambertin, and from such a stunning classic vintage, this recommendation is a no-brainer. Owned by the Devillard Family and run by current inspirational generation brother & sister team Amaury & Aurore Devillard, this producer is an absolute force within its Appellation and has garnered vast recognition across the wine world and infinite respect within Burgundy itself.
