100% Pinot Noir. This patch of vines, while less than 5km north of Millstream, and at similar elevation, produces a very different wine. Planted to MV6 in 1983, it shows slightly less fruit intensity but more structure than its nearest neighbouring vines. The red volcanic soils face very slightly to the south and look more in the direction of the Tarago reservoir. These plants grow the lushest green canopy of any of our vines. Aromas of violets and rose with blue fruits and poached pear, this wine has a slightly sweeter fruit profile with a soft, velvety texture. It is subtle and restrained but still complex and detailed. It has always been our aspiration to grow our own fruit. Until recently the vast majority of our production has been from purchased grapes. In 2017 we were given the opportunity to lease the four vineyards detailed below. They are all sites that we believe have distinctive character and the potential to produce high quality fruit. The 2019 vintage single vineyard wines are the realisation of a long held dream. The fruit was hand harvested into 15kg crates and then hand sorted before being fully destemmed. Fermentation took place in wooden open-top fermenters. No temperature control was used and there were no punch downs or pump overs. No additions were made. The wine was pressed after 30 days' maceration. Filled to 30% new French oak for 10 months. ABV 12%
